Hi everybody! (All 5 of you that read this blog). I’ve been absent for too long but it’s been a roller coaster of a year. I keep starting drafts of things to post but never finish it and never post it. Info dump ahead just FYI.
I had a pretty rough go of it from December last year to about March of this year. I suffered a miscarriage middle of December, then my parents (whom my husband and I are extremely close with) moved out of state, then end of January I sprained (nearly broke) my ankle, had to deal with a ton of insurance issues, went no-weight-bearing on that ankle for a month….it was a whole thing. THEN in April I found out I was pregnant again…(my rainbow baby and I am now 27 weeks with a little girl!) and my husband and I knew that we couldn’t afford to raise our baby in California. SO by the end of June we moved out of state to live with my parents in the Midwest until we could get on our feet again.
So yeah. We’re out of So Cal, living in the Midwest, and expecting a little girl (currently kicking my belly. I don’t think she likes my iPad case resting on her space.) There’s been lots of heartache, lots of changes, but lots of good that’s come out of it.
ATTENTION: OF THE FOLLOWING NON OF THIS IS UP FOR DEBATE. This is to hopefully get your mind turning and to open you up to other ideas and possibilities. I am open to other thoughts as well so feel free to leave a thoughtful and KIND comment below AFTER you finish reading the ENTIRE blog.
Anyways, I had some wonderful conversations today. My Aunt and her husband came out to visit us for the weekend (had a wonderful time btw) and today at breakfast we got into a discussion about prehistory and early man. Usually in a room full of Christians that can be a very hairy topic…but in this case it was very insightful and everyone seemed to listen to what the other had to say. Later on my dad and I had another discussion on it. He leans more towards being a Young Earth-er (aka believing the earth is only a few thousand years old) while I am an Old Earth-er (aka believing the earth is millions of years old).
DISCLAIMER: Deep down I do not care either way. Being a Christian I believe God can do whatever He wants. When I became an Archaeologist I realized I had a choice to make between these. Because if I decided on Young Earth, if I ever found something that needed to be radio carbon dated and it came back as millions of years old…what would I say? My equipment is wrong? And if I used it again on something else and it came back as thousands of years old…it was right simply because it fit my opinion? No. I couldn’t in my right mind do that. So I decided on Old Earth…BUT to reiterate it makes no difference to me either way and I can see both ways being equally plausible.
Ok, back the discussions I had earlier.
As I was saying, my dad leans more Young Earth, and I Old Earth, but we had a very good discussion that I believe led us both to understanding the viewpoint of the other more. While I won’t reiterate all of the conversations (my pregnancy-brain is NOT awake enough for that), I want to just go over the musings in my head about this topic after all of the discussions.
I am the type of person who, when it comes to science, loves to ponder, come up with theories, and is ok NOT knowing the answers. I love musing over how God created the world. One of my most recent thinkings is this. In the days of creation, God did not actually set up time and the telling of seasons until the 4th day:
“And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.”
Genesis 1:14-19 ESV
So does this mean that the first 3 days of creation were an indefinite amount of time (“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” 2 Peter 3:8 ESV and from the 4th day on, they were normal 24hr days? I don’t know. Just a thought.
And how long was the periods between Adam and Eve, and the other events later in Genesis? Adam and Eve had to have more than just Cain, Abel, and Seth because by the time Cain had murdered Abel there were already cities and people that he was afraid would kill him (Genesis 4:14-16). Where did THOSE people come from?? Adam and Eve? Did God create other people before Adam and Eve? The creation of man and woman is mentioned twice both in Genesis 1:26-31 and in Genesis 2. Was this the same creation, just summarized in chapter 1 and expanded upon in chapter 2? Or are these two separate events?
DISCLAIMER: These are all things that I would say are not “Salvation points”. In other words they do not affect your salvation with Jesus. For me the main thing is, as long as I am believing that Christ died and rose again for my sins, the only way to the Father is through Him, that God created the universe (no big bang), God created us with the work of His hands (no macro-evolution), then I’m probably ok haha.
Also, my apologies that this is basically word-vomit at this point. But I’ve been dying to get all of this out and it’s been taking waaay too long.
HEADS UP! Separate point…letting you know so you know to shift the gears in your brain.
Neanderthals. Now, there is actual, physical, scientific proof that they existed. Nearly completed skulls/skeletons, as well as DNA found in Neanderthal remains that we still carry around in our DNA today. They did, in fact, exist. (Not an opinion, but fact). I do not, however, believe that they were part of a “missing link” or part of the evolutionary chain. I think that they were humans, like us, that had very different physical characteristics that we then slowly grew out of as the world and climate changed, as we spread over the earth and settled in different places.
But what about other early man species that are to supposedly have existed? (Homo erectus, homo habilius, Australopithecus afaransis, etc.) We do have bones of these creatures and the do not exactly fit with our DNA, or exactly the DNA of any other animal we have today. Were they other creatures God created that died out much like the dinosaurs? (And don’t get me started on dinos. They existed. The end). Or were they a product of when the Nephilim came down and were mating with human women of earth? (Genesis 6:4).
I really don’t know the answers to any of these questions. But I am ok NOT knowing the answers to them. I enjoy theorizing, I enjoy musing over the infinite possibilities, and many mysteries of our God. It is what makes Him so great and enhances my need for Him in my life.
What I really hope is that this just gets your mind thinking. Like I said earlier none of this is up for debate. Just to get the wheels in your brain turning. If you have your own theories and ideas feel free to share them as long as you are not rude, trying to spark an argument, or trying to tell me I am wrong about something that I clearly stated is JUST a theory.
Thanks so much for reading! Here is hoping that I can write more frequently.

Hey Amber,
Its your old archaeology pal, Lauren. I so enjoy your ramblings. Please post more 🙂
I also have found so much contentment in not needing to know everything lately and have not been so hard hearted towards young earth theories. I had not thought about it in a while until a lady I met at the airport handed me a book called “Explore the World, Knowing God Exists by Observing Creation” by Julie Von Vett & Bruce Malone. I can’t say that I am totally convinced of young earth theory yet lol but it was an interesting discussion and I actually really like the way this book is set up. Each day explains a topic about archaeology, paleontology, biology, botany, design, truth etc. and then leaves a related bible verse. And while I can’t say I agree with everything since it takes a pretty hard stance on young earth as being Biblically accurate, I love the set up. It gives me bite size topics to research one day at a time and also relates some really cool facts about creation to scripture. Maybe worth a look if you are interested.
Anyways, hope you are well. Keep it up with the blog ❤
